Here are some helpful hints to buying a used car online. Buying a used car is always a little scary; whether you buy online, at a used car lot or from an individual. It's hard to know exactly what you're getting into. However there are some things that you can do to ensure that you have a lemon free experience when buying a used car.

Begin by researching the car that you're thinking about buying. In this technology age it's pretty easy to find out just about everything there is to know about the car that you're considering buying. All you need is the Vehicle Identification Number more commonly known as the VIN. For a small price you can find out if the car has ever been wrecked, if it has passed emissions tests, when and where it has been serviced and every state that the vehicle has ever been sold in as well as any outstanding liens, if the car has ever been used as a rental car and more. If you are looking at several different cars you can pay a few extra dollars and get an unlimited plan that will allow you to check as many vehicles as you like.

The thing that you should look at first is the condition of the car. Is there rust, corrosion damage, dents and dings? Has the car been wrecked? If it has, look farther there could be damage that isn't visible. Also check the legal background, it would be terrible to buy a car and then find out that it isn't yours after all. Rental cars are never a good deal even if you get it cheap. Chances are you'll be buying a headache. You never want to buy a car that has been flooded because that increases the chances of rust and corrosion damage.

Consider the age of the vehicle even if it looks good and runs good right now. After about 10 years you can expect to be repairing and replacing parts and the millage is higher on older cars. Four to five years old is a good age for a used car, the insurance is cheaper and they have lasted long enough to be dependable, but not worn out.

Find out what the car is worth and if you're trading in your old car be sure that you know what its worth too. A lot of car dealers will offer you a fraction of what your car is worth on a trade in and then turn right around and sell it for five times what they gave you for it. If possible sell your old car yourself; you'll get what it's worth that way.

Last, but not least take your time and don't be afraid to go home and think it over. Consider everything that you have learned about the car and if it seems like a good deal to you, and you like the car; then chances are it is a good deal. So go for it.
